Enterprise proof
I built Verizon’s least-cost-routing platform — then modernized it onto Linux.
Two full technology generations of the same mission-critical system. Built from scratch on Microsoft SQL Server, then migrated end-to-end to MySQL on Red Hat Enterprise Linux with zero production downtime when Verizon retired the internal data center.
Phase 1 · 2009–2018
Built the platform from the ground up
- 10-server Microsoft SQL Server cluster on a 164 TB on-prem private cloud.
- Heartbeat failover, hot-swap disk arrays, full HA / DR.
- Designed the least-cost routing system on top — SQL/T-SQL optimization, analytics, decision support.
- Contributed to $150M+ in operational savings; earned a U.S. patent for the routing architecture.
- Led the SQL DBA team; bridged business, engineering, and vendors.
Phase 2 · 2018–2023
Modernized it onto Linux with zero downtime
- Architected and led the migration of the entire LCR stack from MS SQL Server / Windows to MySQL on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Zero production downtime; operational savings preserved throughout the cutover.
- Simultaneously architect, RHEL system administrator, application lead, and Senior Tech Manager.
- Interface between the external consulting firm and internal Verizon stakeholders.
- Owned data-model conversion, T-SQL → MySQL translation, cutover sequencing, and HA validation on the new RHEL stack.

Architect and ship LLM-powered SaaS on Claude, GPT, and Gemini — context engineering, structured output, retry/idempotency semantics, evaluation harnesses, cost-aware multi-provider routing through the Vercel AI Gateway. Anthropic Certified Developer (Claude Code). Operate multiple production repositories simultaneously with Claude Code and Codex as primary force multipliers — measured 5–10× delivery acceleration on refactoring, architectural analysis, cross-platform migration, and documentation. Profitability-first design on every product: explicit unit economics, per-vendor cost tracking in micros, server-side cap enforcement, and a documented path to break-even from customer one. 50+ shipped apps across the DreamForge ecosystem. Verizon LCR modernization — MS SQL/Windows → MySQL/RHEL, zero downtime
Architected and led the multi-year migration of the entire LCR stack onto Red Hat Enterprise Linux and MySQL as Verizon retired the internal data center. Served simultaneously as architect, RHEL system administrator, application lead, Senior Tech Manager, and the interface between the external consulting firm and internal stakeholders.

Verizon Senior Tech Manager and Solutions Architect — build phase
Architected the 10-server, 164 TB Microsoft SQL Server private-cloud platform with heartbeat failover and hot-swap arrays. Designed the least-cost routing system on top — $150M+ operational savings and a U.S. patent. Built before modern AI was mainstream, but the LCR engine had ~200 ms per call to compute the cheapest multi-leg route — each leg potentially riding on a partner network rather than Verizon’s own — against dynamically changing pricing, congestion, capacity, time of day, and day of week. Every routing decision and its measured outcome (efficiency, dollars saved) fed back to auto-tune the routing logic, so the platform kept getting better month over month on its own — effectively a self-adjusting expert system that evolved by itself — the same closed-loop learning pattern modern ML formalized years later. Led a cross-functional team spanning DevOps engineers, SQL and Oracle DBAs, programmers, subject-matter experts, and business leaders — the role where I fully recognized my ability to be the bridge between the exec team and the tech team, fluent in both languages and trusted by both sides.

GTE/Verizon hybrid-network architect — Banyan → Microsoft migration, 25% YoY cost reduction
Joined GTE (now Verizon) as one of the few engineers fluent in both Banyan VINES and Microsoft networking, and used that hybrid-environment skill to architect the migration off Banyan onto Microsoft. Key architect for the SMS Server rollout that pushed software to Microsoft client computers across the estate. Installed and ran Windows Servers, SQL Servers, and SMS Servers in the GTECC branch of the GTE/Verizon data center to support the platform — cutting infrastructure costs 25% year over year. The hybrid-network depth and SQL DBA work in this period became the foundation for the LCR platform that followed.

Led ComEd automation rollout in Chicago — 3,000 PCs, hands-free, $500K/year saved
Systems analyst and consulting work spanning South Africa and Chicago. Led a team of 5 consultants on the ComEd (Chicago) account, designing and shipping hands-free automated rollout and software installation for 3,000 client computers. The automation replaced a 200-person IBM PC support team doing the work manually and saved ComEd $500K per year. First taste of the “architect the automation, retire the manual headcount” pattern that later defined the Verizon LCR work.

Built nationwide networks and data centers for Caltex and Woolworths
Network engineer at Persetel Networks delivering enterprise infrastructure for two anchor clients with nationwide footprints: Caltex and Woolworths. Designed and ran automated PC rollouts, Microsoft Server builds, and Banyan VINES network administration across the estate. Certified MCSE and Banyan Certified Network Engineer during the same period — the infrastructure muscle the Verizon platform later sat on top of.

Team lead and system architect on the final-year MEDPAC (medical patient account billing) project. Our team won the national inter-university competition across South Africa — the recognition converted directly into my first job offer. Same lead-and-architect pattern that has shaped every system I’ve built since.
